Hi, I am Gaynor
I came into Social Work later in my life. After completing an access to higher education course and a degree in Cultural Studies, I took the plunge and completed my Social Work Degree.
While completing my access course I was diagnosed with dyslexia. This was a huge event in my professional and personal development, which helped me to understand many of the challenges I had faced during my education.
I graduated from the University of Wolverhampton in 2013. Whilst studying for my Social Work degree I had placements at a community centre that offered a ‘wet room’ facility; this allows people to safely consume alcohol in a controlled environment. I also had placements in a day service for adults with learning disability, which I enjoyed a lot. My final year was spent in Birmingham at a specialist social work education and employment service ( the SWEET Project) where I had a range of experiences including family support work, acting as an Appropriate Adult for an older man accused of sex offences, and working with Birmingham Children’s Social Work Team.
I have worked predominately in duty and assessment, and early intervention.
I have always been based in the Midlands, but have enjoyed spending some time working at Norfolk Local Authority in their assessment and early intervention service in the Broadlands and Great Yarmouth teams.
I spent an academic year as a Designated Safeguarding Lead and Family Liaison Worker at a challenging primary school in the Sandwell Area, which I really enjoyed.
I also tried my hand at Teaching adults at the University of Wolverhampton but quickly realized that this was not for me, so returned to Social Work.
As far as I can recall I have had an interest and commitment to social justice, equality of opportunity and a love of difference and diversity; this has underpinned my social work practice throughout my career.
I am married to Bernard and I have two adult daughters, and three grandchildren, Megan 21, Alfie 14 and Nancy 11. I also have a Labradoodle called Trent.
I enjoy listening to music and have an eclectic taste. I also enjoy going out to eat nice food while chatting and putting the world to right with my friends.
I used to enjoy holidays overseas, but since Trent came into our lives we have started to explore the UK.
